Dr Emily Mason
Clinical and Forensic Psychologist, BSc (Hons), MRes, ForenClinPsyD
About me
Hello, I’m Emily! I’m a dual qualified psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as both a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist. What this means is that I have a broad range of knowledge, skills and experience. Often, I work with people who have multiple and complex needs.
When not at work, you will likely find me at a craft fair, ‘pottering’ in the garden, doing some form of DIY or dunking one too many biscuits into a cup of tea!
My Experience
My initial interest in psychology started a long time ago, and it stemmed from a desire to understand myself. Looking back on this, I have realised that ‘understanding’ isn’t a given, especially as humans are such complex beings. Understanding or sense making, is something that takes time, thought and work; for ourselves, and in our efforts to understand each other and the world around us.
I am experienced in working with clients of all ages – children, adolescents, adults and older adults. I have worked for many years within the NHS across inpatient and community services. I have also worked within private healthcare, charity organisations, the Criminal Justice System and specialist services for those who are neurodiverse.
My Approach
Within my approach, I work with a range of psychological, emotional and relational difficulties. These may include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, interpersonal difficulties, behaviours of concern including risk and/or offending behaviour, and trauma. I have a collaborative approach and works integratively; meaning that I draw on several, evidence based, therapeutic models. My aim is to adapt my approach, to fit with individual needs.
To begin with, I complete an assessment to understand more about you, and the difficulties showing up in your life. Together we will make sense of these, in the context of your life story. In doing so, therapeutic intervention (therapy) can then be offered in a way that is tailored, person centred and meaningful.
In addition to therapy, I am experienced in specialist assessments such as formal risk assessments, assessments of psychological well-being, and assessments of cognitive and adaptive functioning.
I am able to provide clinical supervision, consultation and training, as well as support organisations to implement service development initiatives. I have strong links with local Universities, where I supervise trainee psychologists and teach as a guest lecturer on both the doctoral and masters teaching programme. This part of my work enables me to effect change on a larger scale, and through others, who will hopefully go on to do the same.
